Message You are right, (Board Directors) will do a better job if they can stand in front of the members. Please count me in.

Message I think that there is a great deal that the members
can do to improve their
chances of getting to the future! Some of these
things are about improving
Alcor's capability. As an ACT and a professional
Engineer I can tell you
that most technology oriented companies are not run
like Alcor. I am *not*
saying that people are not working very hard at
Alcor but that there are
some very basic things that need to done that are
central to our business.

For example, a company that makes soup should be
able to tell you
quantitatively what makes a good can of soup and how
to measure the goodness
of each can that comes out of the factory AND should
be able to predict
(estimate) the goodness of a particular can given
all the things that went
into making it like how hot it got while cooking,
how long it stayed hot,
how long it took to cool down etc. This is an
essential tool to be able to
decide how to improve how best to recover when
things don't go right etc.

Alcor has struggled with getting this tool but does
not have it yet. You can
just sit on your butts and assume you will make it
to the future OR you can
get involved in improving your chances. We certainly
don't have all the time
in the world. You could die tomorrow! Again, I will
say that people are
working hard at Alcor but I think that Alcor can
improve a great deal by
more accountability and open discussion. I DON'T
WANT TO SEE ALCOR DESTROYED
AND DON’T HAVE ANY INTENTIONS OF GOING ELSEWHERE. I
think that Alcor is till
the greatest Cryonics organization that has ever
existed but it can be much
better.

I personally believe that Alcor and organizations
like it will have a much
tougher time when Cryonics comes knocking at he
columns of their terror
management foundation. Now is the time to build as
strong an organization as
we can to weather the storms to come!

Message I'm an Alcor memeber since maybe 2000. I've read all the postings on this site before making this post. I used to attend all the board meetings when I joined. That my schedule has changed over the years is the primary reason I come the meetings very rarely now. Another reason is I have my own life to live and don't really have the time to pay attention to everything that goes on. And yet another reason (as Mr Pizer and others pointed out) I don't really have any say anyway.

I agree that some of the directors should have actual experience of running a successful business (meaning that is makes a consistent profit and grows over time). Something also desireable to me is that to be a director requires having a positive networth. If they can't manage their own money, they certainly shouldn't be managing others'. Note: I am merely stating a preference. I am not aware of anyone's current financial status.

I support the idea of accountability for the directors. Some hybrid concept like the members electing people as candidates to be directors and the directors choosing among those is most appealling to me. I prefer that to the idea of directors picking the candidates and the membership voting for them unless there is going to be a "none of the above" type option.

I agree with the person who wrote that power corrupts. And that applies to the masses just as readily as it does to individuals.

Thanks,
Mike

Message My husband and I have made our suspension arrangements with Alcor and are also associate members of CI. To be frank - I can't even begin to imagine what it is like to try and meet the needs and demands of such a diverse and highly opinionated community and applaud the efforts of current staff to do just that! I feel that members should have a voice and actively participate in the direction that Alcor takes. But I agree with Kennita - I'd like to see what that means in real terms.

Message (A-1490; member since 4/1994) I like the idea of members having a voice on the Board on the face of it, but I think that to make a case that restructuring is necessary, a concise listing of things that members have thought were important to do, that were presented to the Board and rebuffed, and of instances where member oversight would have been likely to avoid negative outcomes, might help to clarify the need for such restructuring. Sounds vaguely like the Declaration of Independence, eh?

Message I have been an Alcor member in my Heart in 1992, but I signed up in 2005. I'm proud to be member of this organization and all together shall reach our objectives if we remain united. I consider the other members as my brothers and sisters and they can all count on me if they needed it. That why, I would be happy to become voluntary for Alcor in Quebec-Canada and also to Scottsdale, my second residence 6 months a year. I would be also happy if I could contribute to the marketing sector, to make better known the organization for thousands of French speaking persons through various Conventions on the Science and the Technology through my country and others countries. We have to speak more about Cryonics, in a way that our ideas is better known and in a way that persons feel interested in this project which I believe

Future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams !
